Ø DIALOGS ACTIVITIES IN THAI NGUYEN PROVINCE

Ø Background

Since 1988, MdM and Hanoi University of Medicine have successfully developed a close cooperation based on common activities in Thai Nguyen province. These activities have been designed aiming at capacity building for health staffs, community health improvement and environmental hygiene. Given local authorities’ great concern and financial aid of International NGO (GRET, MdM, VECO and AFD) under DIALOGS project’s framework, Hanoi University of Medicine and MdM have jointly implemented the project component:
”Building up a community health care practice center in Thai Nguyen for students of Hanoi University of Medicine”

Intervention area: Phu Luong district, Thai Nguyen province.

Ø Beneficiaries
 - At national level:
 +/ Hanoi University of Medicine: 40 Teachers of Public Health Faculty; staffs and leaders of the University involved in the project

+/ Staffs of the district’s health care centre: 25 people

- At commune level:
+/ Project steering board: 14 staffs
+/ Health care staffs of communes: 31 staffs

Ø Ongoing and done activities

There are four key activities as follows:
  Capacity building
Under the project framework, 21 training programs will be held to promote capacity building for local health staffs, in particular:
-  8 self-training programs for 31 health staffs of selected communes
-  1 training program of management and planning for 22 health staffs of the district and selected communes
-  1 training program of communication skill and health care education for 22 health staffs of the district and selected communes
-  1 training program of planning skill 23 health staffs of the district and selected communes
-  1 training program of midwifery skill and obstetrical emergency for 14 nurses
-  2 training programs of providing first aid service and treatment related to internal medicine for 21 doctors of district medicine centers
-  1 training program of providing health care to the elderly for health staffs in 28 health staffs of Phu Ly, Hop Thanh and On Luong communes
-  1 training program of health care guide and treatment methods of some common diseases often affecting to children and women for 28 health staffs of Phu Ly, Hop Thanh and On Luong communes
-  1 training program of some common diseases often affecting the elderly for 28 health staffs of 3 communes including Phu Ly, Hop Thanh and On Luong
-  1 training program of some popular diseases for 28 health staffs of 3 communes including Phu Ly, Hop Thanh and On Luong
-  1 training program of HIV for 30 health staffs of Phu Luong health care centre and health station
-  1 training program of HIV control at district level, communication and OI for 20 health staffs of the communes


  Research/Study
To date, there have been 2 studies done:
-  Study 1: "Community attitudes towards HIV/AIDS diseases and victims affected by HIV"
-  Study 2: “Knowledge, attitudes and practices of doctors towards HIV/AIDS in Thai Nguyen’’
 

 Activities on field for students
400 students of Hanoi University of Medicine involved in the project with activities in Phu Ly, Hop Thanh and On Luong communes of Phu Luong district.


Activities concerning clean water and environment hygiene
-  231 wells and 431 toilets to be built
-  Of which 198 wells and 342 toilets have been built and delivered to the locals
-  Trainings of managing and maintaining water supply systems, and environment hygiene knowledge provided to 111 participants of Phu Ly, Hop Thanh and On Luong.


 These activities have provided important and useful information on community health improvement and been highly appreciated by the local authorities and project steering board.

Ø Follow up activities in coming time
In coming time, the following activities will be carried out:

-  Hold new training programs of capacity building
-  Provide trainings on field to 130 third and fifth year students of Hanoi University of Medicine in Phu Ly, Hop Thanh and On Luong
-  Accomplish the study 2 “Knowledge, attitudes and practices of doctors towards HIV/AIDS in Thai Nguyen”
-  Finish building wells and toilets as planned
-  Evaluate project performance when the project finishes
