Ø Red River Program
Training and research activities aim at switching the old-fashioned farming system in Red river basin into advanced technology-applying farming practices

 

   
 
 

The program was launched under the context where Vietnam has been in progress of reforming agricultural policies (agricultural decollectivization). It has been contributing to the process leading back to family agriculture as well as the adaptation to fast changing farming systems for over past fifteen years.


In five selected interventions where typical farming systems of the North of Vietnam exist, Red River Program links research – development with training in an effort to reinforce technology application and socio-economic promotion with close cooperation of local farmers.
 

Ø Program's Objectives
 1. Promote agricultural cultivation, diversify husbandry activities as well as manage natural resources in a sustainable way.


2. Maximize technology application and farming system improvement for better suitability to various local natural, economic and social conditions.


3. Create new inter-sector and institutional dialogue playgrounds aiming at promoting dynamic for rural economy and applying more suitable agricultural policies.

 

4. Assist developing the agricultural sector mechanisms appropriate to market demand and create a favorable corridor for development of inter-sector networks with strong involvement of relevant state agencies.


5. Encourage farmer foundations/organizations engaged in management of collective services/activities and rural development policies.
 

ØActivities
Conduct trials and disseminate advanced technologies to farmers:

- Trials on new water resources management schemes,
- Support to farmer organization development,
- Establishment of new collective investment funds,
- Research on value chain,
- Diversification of agricultural services,
- Research on sustainable farming models.
 

ØAchievement

Successfully transferring advanced technologies in terms of husbandry, farming practices and land management.


Developing and/or improving available agricultural services and reinforcing the value chain mechanism.


Setting up new dialogue/forums for local actors


Developing farmer organizations and encouraging local people involved in policy development and decision making.

 

Capacity building and expertise improvement in order to manage collaborators and partners effectively to ensure the sustainability of project impacts.


Summing up and sharing lessons learnt from the project to local agencies and other relevant organizations at all level.
